What to Wear to a Reiki Session (And How to Prepare)

If you’ve booked your first Reiki session — or you’re thinking about it — one of the most common questions is surprisingly simple:

“What should I wear?”

And closely followed by:

“Do I need to do anything to prepare?”

The short answer is: keep it simple. Reiki isn’t something you need to prepare for in a complicated way.

But I’ll walk you through it so you know exactly what to expect.

What to wear to a Reiki session

The most important thing is comfort.

You don’t need anything special, and there’s no dress code.

Most people wear things like:

  • leggings or loose trousers

  • a t-shirt or jumper

  • something soft and comfortable

Try to avoid anything that feels restrictive or uncomfortable when you’re lying down.

You’ll stay fully clothed throughout the session, so just wear whatever makes you feel relaxed.

That’s really it.

Do you need to take anything off?

No.

Reiki is non-invasive, and you remain fully clothed at all times.

There’s no physical manipulation of muscles, no oils, and no need to change into anything else.

You just lie down, get comfortable, and that’s where the session begins.

How to prepare for a Reiki session

The honest answer is: you don’t need to do very much at all.

But there are a few things that can help you get the most out of the experience.

1. Try not to overthink it

A lot of people arrive wondering:

  • “Am I doing this right?”

  • “What if I don’t feel anything?”

  • “What’s meant to happen?”

You don’t need to prepare mentally or spiritually in any specific way.

Just arrive as you are.

2. Avoid rushing beforehand if you can

If possible, give yourself a bit of space before your session.

Coming in straight from stress or a rushed environment isn’t a problem, but if you can slow down slightly beforehand, it often helps your body settle more easily.

3. Keep expectations open

Every Reiki session is different.

You might feel:

  • deeply relaxed

  • mentally quiet

  • emotional

  • or simply calm and still

Or you might not feel much at all in the moment.

All of these experiences are valid.

4. Eat and drink normally

You don’t need to fast or do anything specific.

Just eat and drink as you normally would. Some people prefer not to have a heavy meal right before, but it’s not a requirement.

5. Wear warm, comfortable layers

Because you’ll be lying still for a while, your body temperature can drop slightly as you relax.

So it can be nice to wear:

  • layers

  • socks

  • something warm and soft

Comfort is the priority.

What happens when you arrive

Most people are a little unsure before their first session, so we usually start with a short, relaxed chat.

Nothing intense — just a chance to settle in and see how you’re feeling.

Then you’ll lie down, get comfortable, and the session begins.

That’s it.

No performance. No expectations.

The most important thing to remember

Reiki isn’t something you need to get right.

You don’t need to:

  • prepare perfectly

  • think the right thoughts

  • or do anything special beforehand

It works best when you simply allow yourself to pause for a while.

Final thoughts

If you’re wondering what to wear to a Reiki session, the answer is probably already in your wardrobe.

And if you’re wondering how to prepare, the simplest approach is usually the best one:

just show up and let yourself rest.

That’s really all there is to it.
