What Happens During a Reiki Session

If you’ve never had Reiki before, it’s completely normal to feel a bit unsure about what actually happens. Most people I meet in my Bristol practice have usually found me through curiosity, recommendation, or because they’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or just a bit disconnected from themselves.
So I thought I’d walk you through it simply — no fluff, no mystery, just what actually happens.
First, we’ll have a short chat
When you arrive, we’ll usually start with a gentle conversation.
Nothing heavy.
Just a chance for you to land, take a breath, and let me know how you’re feeling and what’s brought you in. Some people talk a lot here, others barely say anything at all — both are completely fine.
There’s no need to “explain yourself properly” or get it right.
You’ll stay fully clothed and lie down comfortably
Reiki is done with you fully clothed, usually lying on a treatment couch. I’ll make sure you’re warm and comfortable before we begin.
Most people close their eyes at this point and just relax. There’s no pressure to do anything in particular — no breathing techniques, no visualisations, no expectations.
You don’t need to know how to receive Reiki. Your only job is to rest.
The Reiki itself is very gentle
Once the session begins, I work through a series of hand positions either lightly on the body or just above it, depending on what feels right.
People often describe it in different ways:
warmth or heat in certain areas
a sense of deep relaxation
tingling or gentle pulsing
emotional release
or sometimes just falling into a very calm, half-asleep state
And sometimes… nothing dramatic at all. That’s completely normal too.
Reiki isn’t something you have to “feel strongly” for it to be working.

Every session is different
One of the things I always say is that no two sessions are the same.
Sometimes people drift into sleep. Sometimes emotions come up. Sometimes the experience is very physical, and other times it feels subtle and quiet.
All of it is fine.
Your system will usually take exactly what it needs on that day — not more, not less.
After the session
At the end, I’ll gently bring you back and we’ll sit for a moment. There’s no rush to jump up or talk straight away.
Some people like to share what they experienced, others prefer not to say much at all. Both are completely okay.
I’ll usually encourage you to drink some water and take it easy for the rest of the day if you can — not because anything “big” has happened, but because your system may feel a little more open or relaxed than usual.
Common questions I get asked
Do I need to believe in Reiki for it to work?”
No. You don’t need to believe in anything specific. Most people just come as they are.
“Will I fall asleep?”
You might. A lot of people do. And that’s absolutely fine — it often means your nervous system is finally getting a break.
“
What if I don’t feel anything?”
That’s also fine. Reiki isn’t about chasing sensations. People often notice effects more in the days afterwards — like better sleep, feeling lighter, or more emotionally settled.
Final thoughts
Reiki is simple, really.
It’s just space.
Space to slow down, space to stop overthinking, and space for your body and mind to settle in a way that most of us don’t get very often anymore.
If you’re curious but unsure, that’s usually a good place to start from.
What is a Reiki session?
A Reiki session is a gentle, non-invasive treatment where the practitioner uses light hand positions to support relaxation and balance in the body. You remain fully clothed and simply rest while the session takes place.
Do you need to do anything during Reiki?
No. Reiki is received passively. Most people simply lie down, relax, and allow the experience to unfold naturally.
